Replace the timing wheels or idlers: Black Eagle and newer Oneidas

On 2000-and-newer Oneidas a thin black timing cable runs through the riser between timing wheels and over idlers. Oneida's Black Eagle timing-wheel pages are missing from our copy, so most steps are our outline; please call first.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. The Kestrel takes no press at all.
  • Never draw the bow while the hub or orange screw is loose.
  • Photograph how the cable wraps each wheel and idler first.
  • Count weight-bolt turns. Wear safety glasses.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing hub (Kestrel: orange timing screw).
  2. Take the weight off evenly until the string can come off, counting turns (Kestrel: 1 at a time).
  3. Kestrel, Phoenix and 2017+ Osprey: ask us before backing the bolts far out.
  4. Take the string off.
  5. Find the timing cable and idler; on a Kestrel, Oneida's diagram shows the cable (#5) and an idler below the limb pocket (#14).
  6. Release the cable tension and lift the cable off the wheels and idlers.
  7. Unscrew the old timing wheel and fit the G-String wheel.
  8. Unscrew the old idler and fit the G-String idler.
  9. Route the cable as in your photos and set tension the way we tell you for your model.
  10. Restring and bring the weight back evenly to your count.
  11. Tiller at the cam noses; on a Black Eagle, loosen the hub and re-tiller if the cable is tighter at one end.
  12. Tighten the hub or orange screw before you draw.
  13. Draw slowly a few times and let down slowly, checking for a smooth draw and the cable staying in its grooves.

Tips

  • Feel your old idlers for burrs, a cause of a bump in the draw. (Dealer Instructions p.40)
