Strings and cables

Replace the string: Black Eagle and C.P. Oneidas

Loosen the timing hub, back the weight bolts off evenly until the string comes free, and swap it. Make sure each power limb is fully seated in its pocket before the weight goes back, and lock the hub again before you draw.

  • Difficulty Moderate
  • Time About 45–60 minutes (estimate)
  • For 10 Oneida models

From Oneida's Black Eagle service manual. The C.P. Oneida booklet (ESC/Black Eagle II, Talon, C.P. Osprey, Pro Eagle, Hawk) shows the same 23 in bracket-press method but not the hub and bolt steps. The Extreme Eagle, Falcon and Switchblade are in the later C.P. booklet, but check with us first.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Order the string length for your model and size (see your model page). Oneida says brace height and cam length tell the sizes apart.
  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. It can badly damage the riser and void the warranty. Only Oneida's bracket press is approved.
  • Never draw the bow while the timing hub is loose.
  • Wear safety glasses and work on a padded table.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing system locking hub (Fig. 2 in Oneida's Black Eagle manual).
  2. Back the two weight bolts off evenly, a couple of turns on one and then the same on the other, until the string can come off. Write down your count. Oneida says the Black Eagle's longer bolts let all the weight come off without the bolts coming loose.
  3. Take the old string off and fit a new one of the same length.
  4. Check that the butt of each power limb is pushed all the way into its limb pocket. Replace the high-bond pocket tape if it's missing or oil-soaked, because it keeps the bow quiet.
  5. Turn the weight bolts back in the same number of turns, evenly, switching between them.
  6. Compare the timing cable (the small black cable through the riser) at each end. If it isn't equally tight, leave the hub loose and tiller the bow.
  7. Measure tiller square from the string to the nose of each cam and adjust the weight bolts until top and bottom match, as on older Oneidas.
  8. Retighten the timing-hub locking screw BEFORE you draw the bow.
  9. Measure brace height and compare it with your model page. To raise it, put the bow in an Oneida bracket press set 23 in apart, take the string off and twist it; untwist to lower it.
  10. Ask us before twisting the string without a press by backing the weight off again.
  11. Put on a new nocking point (see 'Set your arrow rest and nocking point').
  12. Make sure nothing can block the outboard limbs. Never dry-fire.

Tips

  • Oneida allows up to 2 equal turns on each bolt without loosening the hub, but a string change needs many more, so loosen it. (Black Eagle Manual p.2)
  • Grease the fiber washers under each weight bolt with light lithium grease, not bearing grease, which can let the bolt back out. (Black Eagle Manual p.2)
