Replace limb pockets, limb bolts and washers: Black Eagle and newer Oneidas

Each power limb sits in a limb pocket (end cap) with the weight bolt through it and washers under the bolt head. Our enclosed aluminum pockets, limb bolts and fiber washers all go here.

  • Difficulty Advanced
  • Time About 1 hour (estimate)
  • For 8 Oneida models

Pockets are listed for these models; bolts and fiber washers for all Oneidas. For 1980s–90s bows or omni washers, ask us. Stealth bolts don't swap with other models.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. The Kestrel takes no press at all.
  • Count weight-bolt turns.
  • Never draw the bow while the timing hub or orange screw is loose. Never dry-fire.
  • Keep oil off the limb pocket. Oneida bonds it to the limb with VHB tape and says to replace oil-soaked tape.
  • Wear safety glasses.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing hub (Kestrel: orange timing screw).
  2. Take the weight off evenly until the string can come off, counting turns (Kestrel: 1 turn at a time).
  3. Kestrel, Phoenix and 2017+ Osprey: ask us before backing the bolts far out.
  4. Take the string off.
  5. Back the bolt the rest of the way out, counting these turns too, and lay the washers out in order.
  6. Lift the power limb out and ask us how best to separate the old pocket from its VHB tape.
  7. Fit the G-String pocket the way the old one sat, and ask us about new tape.
  8. Seat the power limb butt all the way into the pocket.
  9. Coat the fiber washers lightly with light lithium grease, never bearing grease.
  10. Restack the washers in their original order. Oneida says the two fiber washers let the steel washer turn freely; ask us if unsure.
  11. Ask us whether an omni washer replaces the steel washer and which way its bevel faces.
  12. Thread each bolt back in by the extra turns you counted, without adding more weight.
  13. Restring and check every cable is in its groove.
  14. Bring the weight back evenly to your count, watching each limb stays seated.
  15. Set tiller, then tighten the hub or orange screw before drawing.
  16. Check weight on a scale within your rated range.
  17. Draw a few times, letting down slowly, and check the limbs track straight and quiet.

Tips

  • The Black Eagle's bolt holes have stainless inserts needing no grease unless very wet. (Black Eagle Manual p.2)
  • A washer trapped under a power limb costs draw weight on older bows. (Dealer Instructions p.38)
