Replace a hinge: Black Eagle and newer Oneidas

On 2000-and-newer Oneidas there are no pylons. Oneida's Black Eagle manual reaches the hinge by sliding the saddle back and rotating the outboard limb. Our cable-through hinge set fits hinges with the power cable through the hinge.

  • Difficulty Advanced
  • Time About 1–2 hours (estimate)
  • For 8 Oneida models

The models we list the hinge set for. Talon, Hawk, Pro Eagle and Falcon, ask us. No Oneida service manual for the Phoenix or 2017+ Osprey.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. The Kestrel takes no press at all.
  • Count weight-bolt turns.
  • Never draw the bow while the timing hub or orange screw is loose. Never dry-fire.
  • Keep fingers clear when rotating or twisting a limb.
  • Wear safety glasses, and inspect the string, cables and E-clips while you're in there.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing hub (Kestrel: the orange timing screw).
  2. Take the weight off evenly until the string can come off, counting turns (Kestrel: 1 turn at a time, switching).
  3. Kestrel, Phoenix and 2017+ Osprey: ask us before backing the bolts far out.
  4. Take the string off.
  5. Loosen the saddle screw and slide the saddle toward the weight bolt (Fig. 7).
  6. Rotate the outboard limb to open the hinge (Fig. 8).
  7. Unhook the power cable where it passes through the hinge, noting its path.
  8. Remove the old hinge and fit the G-String hinge the same way.
  9. Check every hinge screw is tight.
  10. Reassemble in reverse: power cable, outboard limb, saddle with cables seated, saddle screw snug.
  11. Seat the power limb butt fully in its pocket.
  12. Restring and start bringing the weight back evenly, straightening the limbs while it's still light.
  13. Finish bringing the weight back to your count.
  14. Set tiller at the cam noses: clockwise brings a nose closer, counter-clockwise moves it away.
  15. Tighten the hub or orange screw BEFORE you draw.
  16. Oil the hinge lightly, wipe off the extra, then draw a few times and let down slowly, listening for noise or clicks.
