Replace the cam bearings: Black Eagle and newer Oneidas

The cams turn on bearings. We don't have Oneida's instructions for these bows, and Oneida recommended factory service for Stealth bearings, so for most people this is a shop job.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. The Kestrel takes no press at all.
  • Never draw the bow while the hub or orange screw is loose.
  • Work clean; loose bearing needles are tiny.
  • Make sure the bearings really are the problem; Oneida called its Stealth and pylon bearings maintenance-free in normal use.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing hub (Kestrel: orange screw), take the weight off evenly while counting, and take the string off.
  2. Kestrel, Phoenix and 2017+ Osprey: ask us before backing the bolts far out.
  3. Remove the cables from the cam and take out the cam and axle.
  4. Ease the pin out slowly; on other Oneidas only the pin and grease hold loose needles in. Ask us if yours has loose needles.
  5. Press the old bearings out and the new ones in.
  6. Add a little good bearing grease if the needles look dry.
  7. Refit the cam and axle and hang the cables exactly as before.
  8. Restring, bring the weight back to your count, tiller, and tighten the hub before drawing.
  9. Draw a few times, letting down slowly, to check everything is smooth.

Tips

  • Ask us whether a drop of light oil might fix a squeak first. (Dealer Instructions p.18)
