Strings and cables

Replace the power and yoke cables: Black Eagle and C.P. Oneidas

Oneida's method for the Black Eagle family: unlock the timing hub, take the weight off, slide the saddle back, swing the outboard limb to open the hinge, swap the cables, then straighten the limbs and lock the hub before you draw.

  • Difficulty Advanced
  • Time About 1–2 hours (estimate)
  • For 10 Oneida models

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Read every step first and give yourself time.
  • Never draw the bow while the timing hub is loose.
  • Never use a regular compound bow press on an Oneida. It can badly damage the riser and void the warranty.
  • Check that your new cables match your size before you take anything apart.
  • Wear safety glasses and keep fingers out of the hinge and away from the cams and saddle. Never dry-fire.

Steps

  1. Loosen the timing system locking hub (Fig. 2).
  2. Back the weight bolts off by the same amount each time until the string is slack enough to lift off, counting your turns. Oneida's other manuals switch ends every 2 full turns.
  3. Lift the string off.
  4. Back off the saddle screw and slide the saddle toward the weight bolt until it clears the outboard limb (Fig. 7).
  5. Swing the outboard limb around on its hinge to expose the hinge (Fig. 8).
  6. Swap the old cables for the new ones, and check that the hinge screws are tight while it's open.
  7. Replace the yokes too if they've already been through one power-cable change.
  8. Reassemble in reverse: outboard limb back, saddle back over the limb with its screw snug, then the string.
  9. Push the butt of each power limb all the way into its pocket. Replace the pocket tape if it's been pulled off or oil-soaked.
  10. Straighten the limbs while the weight is still light: each outboard butt should sit parallel to its power limb, and a yoke cable shifted sideways in the saddle can pull a limb out of line.
  11. Bring the weight back with equal turns, switching ends, to your count.
  12. Check tiller with the hub still loose (see 'Change draw weight and set tiller: Black Eagle and C.P. Oneidas').
  13. Lock the timing hub before you draw the bow.
  14. Check brace height against your model page. Oneida raises it by twisting the string in a bracket press set 23 in apart.
  15. Draw a few times to settle the new cables, then recheck tiller, brace height and limb alignment.

Tips

  • Photograph every cable end at the cams, hinge and saddle first. Doing one side at a time leaves the other side to copy.
  • Grease the two fiber washers under each weight bolt with light lithium grease, not bearing grease. (Black Eagle Manual p.2)
