Lube and care: Black Eagle, C.P., Kestrel, Phoenix and Osprey

Before you start

  • Keep oil off the limb pockets; it can damage the tape bonding each pocket to its limb.
  • Waxing and wiping need no tools. Anything with weight bolts is a bigger job.

Steps

  1. Wax the string lightly; the Kestrel manual says every time you shoot.
  2. Keep wax off the loops around the limb tips.
  3. Wipe the metal parts with a little light oil after wet or humid trips.
  4. Oil a noisy hinge with one drop and wipe off the extra. Other noise causes: brace height, a loose saddle screw (click) or a loose timing system.
  5. Keep oil off the limb pockets; replace the bonding tape if it comes off or gets oil-soaked.
  6. Grease the weight-bolt fiber washers with light lithium grease, never bearing grease; the riser threads need none unless very wet.
  7. Treat greasing those washers as part of a bigger job, since the weight has to come off, or let us do it.
  8. Follow the timing-lock rule before turning any bolt: Kestrel, always loosen the orange screw; Black Eagle, up to 2 equal turns allowed with the hub locked, otherwise loosen it. Lock it again before drawing.
  9. Have the whole bow looked over once a year; the Kestrel manual recommends a yearly dealer service.

Tips

  • A click often means a loose saddle screw; oil won't fix it. (Kestrel Manual p.3)
