Strings and cables

Replace and tension the timing cable: Stealth Eagle

The Stealth's timing cable comes ready-made and swaged on both ends, so there's no length to set. It has its own install trick and a take-up spool to adjust.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • The Stealth timing cable is built to an exact length and swaged on both ends. Make sure yours is made for the Stealth.
  • Never dry-fire, and keep the limbs clear of treestands and branches.
  • Don't over-tighten the take-up spool.
  • Wear safety glasses.

Steps

  1. Replace the cable when it won't hold even tension after being over-stressed, usually by a dry-fire or a limb hitting a treestand.
  2. Take the weight off (Oneida's string change backs the bolts all the way out), then remove the sight, string and grip.
  3. Check both sides of each saddle for cracks if the damage came from a dry-fire or broken string or cable.
  4. Note the ends: the long swage goes into the edge of the timing wheel, the short swage into the take-up spool.
  5. Wind the old cable onto the spool until it pushes the spool out of its boss.
  6. Remove the old cable and route the new one through the riser under the grip with the long swage in the edge of the timing wheel. Check with us if this isn't obvious.
  7. Feed the short swage into the timing wheel, lift it with a small screwdriver until about 1/2 in pokes through the boss, and fit it into the spool.
  8. Seat the spool flush with its boss. If it won't sit flush, loosen the set screw and turn the spool counter-clockwise while pressing in until the cable slips past, then turn clockwise and snug the set screw.
  9. Grease the cable where it runs under the grip, then refit the grip, string and sight.
  10. Bring the weight back, seating each power limb in its pocket first, switching ends every 2 turns.
  11. Check tiller by feel at each timing wheel and even it with the weight bolts.
  12. Even the cable if the bow is tillered but tension still differs: loosen the spool set screw, back the spool off and retighten it without over-tensioning, then lock the set screw.
  13. Aim for even, moderate tension: too tight slows the bow, too loose lets the cams rock. Fine-tune arrow flight with about a quarter turn on a weight bolt.

Tips

  • Snug the set screw lightly whenever tension is off so the spool can't pop out. (Stealth Eagle Instructions p.7)
  • Each cam's halves are joined by a pin and 1/4-20 flat-head screw that must stay tight. (Stealth Eagle Instructions p.8)
