Tuning and setup

Change draw weight and set tiller: Discovery

The Discovery has no cams and no timing screw. Weight comes from the two weight bolts, and you check tiller from each end cap to the string.

  • Difficulty Moderate
  • Time 20–30 minutes
  • For 1 Oneida model

Oneida Discovery, plus FireBrand-built Discoveries.

All how-to guides

We're still double-checking this guide against how we do it in the shop. If anything doesn't match your bow, stop and text us or call 270-318-2020.

Before you start

  • Know your range (FireBrand lists 25/45 and 50/70 lb) and never exceed it.
  • Peak weight drops about 5 lb per inch of shorter draw (FireBrand).
  • Check the cables at the slides; a broken strand stretches the cable so the bow loses tiller and weight.
  • Wear safety glasses. Never dry-fire.

Steps

  1. Turn a weight bolt with a 3/16 in Allen: clockwise adds weight, counter-clockwise removes it, about 5 lb per full turn.
  2. Switch between top and bottom every 2 full turns, or the center cable slide can roll off its rod.
  3. Use a pipe or long ratchet if the bolts get stiff, but stop when the center of the end cap touches the riser.
  4. Stay under your maximum weight to protect the carbon guide rod and riser.
  5. Check the cables sit in all three slides before you draw.
  6. Measure tiller with a 12 in ruler from the back of each end cap to the string.
  7. Turn the top bolt counter-clockwise if the top measures closer, until even.
  8. Turn the top bolt clockwise if the top measures farther.
  9. Send the bow to us if it won't tiller with even bolt turns; FireBrand's fix is twisting the cable, never the yoke.
  10. Check the weight on a scale and pick what's comfortable for you.

Tips

  • Back the weight off for long storage to keep the cables from stretching. (Discovery Instruction Manual p.15)
  • For a quieter Discovery: heavier arrows, tight accessories, brace height in range and string silencers. (Discovery Instruction Manual p.16)
